Russell Wilson might continue playing for the Denver Broncos in 2024, as per NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero. The Broncos are considering various options for their quarterback position next season, including potentially restructuring Wilson’s contract. Wilson is set to receive $39 million guaranteed for the upcoming season, with a $37 million injury guarantee for 2025, which would become fully guaranteed if he remains on the roster by March 17. This clause caused tension between Wilson and the Broncos in the previous season, leading to Wilson’s benching for the last two regular-season games, ostensibly to prevent any injury triggering the clause.
Wilson claimed the Broncos had asked him to renegotiate his contract mid-season, specifically regarding the $37 million guarantee for 2025. He alleged that they threatened to bench him if he didn’t agree to extend the trigger date for the guarantee. However, the Broncos denied any such threats and stated that the benching was solely a football decision. Despite a challenging start to the 2024 season, Wilson improved significantly compared to his performance in 2022, throwing 26 touchdown passes with just eight interceptions. The team managed a 6-3 record in the games leading up to Wilson’s benching.
Although there are reports of the Broncos exploring all options, it’s anticipated that they may opt to release Wilson before the deadline for his 2025 salary guarantee.
