Daniel Jones’ ACL injury disrupted the Giants’ quarterback plans for the 2023 season. New York had to rely on a combination of Tyrod Taylor and Tommy DeVito at quarterback. However, they also considered bringing back Davis Webb, a familiar face, after Jones got injured.
Broncos head coach Sean Payton revealed on the Up & Adams show that the Giants tried to re-sign Webb following Jones’ injury. Webb had started his coaching career with the Broncos in 2023 after being a third-round pick for the Giants in 2017. His potential return to playing would have been significant given his recent transition to coaching.
Webb’s journey saw him make his regular-season debut with the Bills in 2021, where he worked under then-OC Brian Daboll. Daboll later became the Giants’ head coach in 2022, prompting Webb to join him in New York. Despite questions about his playing future, Webb started the final game of the 2022 regular season.
Before retiring from playing, Webb had been approached by the Bills to become their QBs coach in 2022. However, he opted to continue playing for one more season. Payton received high recommendations about Webb and hired him for the Broncos coaching staff.
The Giants’ quarterback performance was lackluster both before and after Jones’ injury. Despite Jones being on a lucrative contract, the team’s quarterback situation remains uncertain. Bringing in Webb as a temporary solution late in the season would have been unconventional, but his familiarity with Daboll’s system could have eased the transition. However, Webb will focus on his coaching duties while the Giants continue to evaluate their quarterback situation for the 2024 season and beyond.
