Stoke City’s 8 biggest transfer flops that supporters will want to forget

In this piece, we’ll explore eight signings made by Stoke City that fans would likely prefer to erase from memory. Ivorian striker Bony, initially known for his success at Swansea, joined Stoke on loan from Manchester City in 2016. Despite being considered one of the Premier League’s top strikers, he struggled during his time at Stoke, scoring only twice and falling out with manager Mark Hughes over his decision to represent Ivory Coast in the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations.

Ballon d’Or winner Owen signed a one-year deal with Stoke for the 2012/13 season. Though in the twilight of his career, Stoke fans expected more from the former Real Madrid player. Owen made just eight substitute appearances, scoring once against Swansea, marking his 150th Premier League goal.

Austrian defender Wimmer’s £18 million transfer to Stoke in the 2017/18 season turned out to be disastrous, with 17 Premier League appearances in a relegation campaign. His subsequent loans and eventual contract termination in May 2021 highlighted the futility of the hefty transfer fee.

Striker Berahino, acquired from West Brom in January 2017, failed to make a significant impact during the 2017/18 season, making 15 appearances without scoring. Although he fared slightly better in the Championship the following season, he eventually moved to Cyprus to play for AEL Limassol.

Defensive midfielder Imbula’s £18 million move from Porto in the 2016 winter transfer window did not live up to expectations. After a decent start, he made only 12 appearances in the 2016/17 season before being loaned out to various clubs. His contract was terminated in February 2020, and he now plays for Istanbulspor in Turkey.

American international Brek Shea, signed in January 2013, faced disappointment at Stoke, making just a few appearances before being loaned to Championship sides. Shea retired in 2023 after stints with various clubs in MLS, including Orlando City, Vancouver Whitecaps, Atalanta United, and Inter Miami.

Former Chelsea and Barcelona player Hleb signed a one-year deal with Stoke for the 2010/11 Premier League season but made only five substitute appearances before being loaned to Fulham. He retired in 2016 after joining Greek club AEK Athens.

Irish goalkeeper Given, signed at the age of 39 in 2015 as cover for Jack Butland, struggled in his three appearances during the 2015/16 campaign, conceding seven goals. His performances did not improve in the following season, and Given conceded 14 goals in just five games before leaving Stoke. Despite a successful career, it was apparent that Given’s age had caught up with him during his time with the Potters.
