The St. Louis Cardinals had a disappointing 2023 season and reacted decisively with a series of actions once the season concluded.
Specifically targeting their starting rotation and bullpen, areas that significantly hindered the team’s performance in 2023, the Cardinals embarked on a mission to bolster their lineup. But their efforts didn’t stop there.
In addition to shoring up their pitching staff, the Cardinals welcomed back veteran infielder Matt Carpenter, a three-time All-Star, who had spent the 2023 season with the San Diego Padres. Carpenter, who had been originally drafted by the Cardinals in the 13th round of the 2009 Major League Baseball June Amateur Draft and had spent the first 11 years of his career with the team, returned to St. Louis.
His return was largely influenced by first baseman Paul Goldschmidt, as reported by MLB.com’s John Denton. Goldschmidt believed that the Cardinals’ clubhouse could benefit from the presence of another seasoned veteran, prompting his advocacy for Carpenter’s return.
“I advocated for Carp — when he was a free agent — to come back,” Goldschmidt expressed, as transcribed by Denton. “I’ve seen the impact he can have both on and off the field. The most successful teams often have players like him because they elevate the performance of those around them, which isn’t always reflected in statistics. I’ll lean on him heavily and seek his insights, particularly regarding my batting technique.”
While Carpenter may not log extensive playing time, his influence within the Cardinals’ clubhouse is expected to be substantial.
