The New York Mets continue to experience a cycle of change without substantial improvement. Despite transitions in ownership and management, the team remains plagued by ineffective leadership reminiscent of past eras.
For instance, as Spring training commences, there’s uncertainty surrounding Pete Alonso, the beloved first baseman. Despite his recent one-year contract extension to avoid arbitration, the Mets haven’t shown interest in securing him for the long term, evident in their lack of contract extension offers. Alonso, expressing his desire to remain with the team, acknowledges the unpredictable nature of the future and emphasizes focusing on the upcoming season.
Despite being a relatively recent addition to the Mets, Alonso has already cemented his place as one of the franchise’s top players, boasting records and accolades. Despite his age and potential, coupled with his expressed commitment to New York, the front office remains hesitant about offering him an extension.
This hesitance was evident when Alonso was made available for trade before last year’s deadline, and now, the team seems inclined to let him explore free agency after the upcoming season, as suggested by Mets president of baseball operations, David Stearns.
Following a turbulent 2023 season, the Mets are poised for a crucial year ahead. While their offseason moves have been underwhelming, the team possesses enough talent to contend for a playoff spot. However, unresolved contract negotiations with Alonso could serve as an unnecessary distraction.
Should Alonso deliver an exceptional performance this season and still face trade or departure, owner Steve Cohen is likely to face backlash from disillusioned fans.
