The New York Mets could benefit from adding another power hitter to their lineup.
Since the disappointing 2023 season, the Mets have shown improvement, especially with the addition of David Stearns, formerly of the Milwaukee Brewers, as their president of baseball operations.
Instead of making big splashes, the Mets have focused on smaller deals for players with potential. While the team looks better on paper, they still lack a significant slugger in the middle of their lineup, which could bolster their chances of competing for a National League Wild Card spot.
J.D. Martinez, a six-time All-Star, remains available and has been linked to the Mets. Despite being 36 years old, Martinez has demonstrated considerable power, hitting 33 home runs and driving in 103 runs in just 113 games for the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2023.
Having previously excelled with the Boston Red Sox, including during their 2018 World Series win, Martinez’s proven track record in big markets makes him an appealing option for the Mets.
With Spring Training underway and Martinez still unsigned, he could be a low-cost but impactful addition to the Mets’ lineup. It’s worth considering giving him a chance.
