LATEST NEWS: Ohio State transfer draws high praise from newly appointed offensive coordinator

After spending a year as the starting quarterback at Ohio State, Kyle McCord made a move to Syracuse. This upcoming season, Will Howard, who transferred from Kansas State, is anticipated to be the primary candidate for the starting QB position at Ohio State. The team is entering the season following an 11-2 record, which notably included a loss to Michigan in their rivalry game.

During a recent spring practice session, Chip Kelly, the new offensive coordinator for the Buckeyes and former head coach at UCLA, commended Howard for his abilities, mindset, and maturity. Although Devin Brown, who was on the team previously, received most of the first-team snaps, Kelly highlighted Howard’s potential, especially given his proficiency in the zone-read option offense, a style Kelly is renowned for and which Howard excelled in at Kansas State.

Howard’s agility on the field, particularly in the red zone, is expected to give him an advantage over Brown in the quarterback competition once he becomes accustomed to Kelly’s system. Last season, Howard showcased his dual-threat capabilities with 2,643 passing yards and 24 touchdowns, along with 351 rushing yards and nine touchdowns on the ground for Kansas State.

With a keen sense of urgency and determination, Howard aims to elevate his performance further as one of the standout transfers for Ohio State. Kelly emphasized the importance of seizing opportunities early on, cautioning against complacency among younger players who may believe they have ample time to establish themselves.
