The Minnesota Vikings have experienced departures this offseason with star quarterback Kirk Cousins and defensive end Danielle Hunter leaving in free agency, highlighting their need for assistance in pass-rushing. Although they brought in Jonathan Greenard and linebacker Andrew Van Ginkel, their collective impact might not adequately replace Hunter, a four-time Pro Bowler.
According to Jordan Schultz, the Vikings are set to discuss a potential deal with free-agent linebacker Jihad Ward.

During the last two seasons, Jihad Ward has been with the New York Giants, where in 2023, he recorded 5.0 sacks, nine quarterback hits, and five tackles for loss. Initially drafted in the second round of the 2016 draft, he played his first two seasons with the Oakland Raiders before joining the Baltimore Ravens, where he made two playoff appearances.
In the previous season, the Minnesota Vikings appeared to have a shot at the playoffs until Kirk Cousins suffered a torn Achilles midseason, leading to a slump where they lost six of their final seven games. While their defense may raise some questions, they boast a strong group of offensive skill players, including wide receivers Justin Jefferson and Jordan Addison, along with tight end T.J. Hockenson.
As of now, Sam Darnold is slated to be their starting quarterback, but there are speculations that they are interested in trading up in the draft to secure someone like J.J. McCarthy. With the No. 11 pick currently in hand, there’s a possibility McCarthy could still be available, though trading up within the top six picks would significantly improve their chances of landing the University of Michigan quarterback.
