After suffering a devastating defeat against the Edmonton Oilers, it’s arguable that the Sabres’ 2023-24 season has hit rock bottom. With their playoff drought extending to 13 years, the question arises: when will this nightmare finally come to an end?
Following a surprising performance in the 2022-23 season, many believed that 13 would be the lucky number to break the streak. However, this hope has been shattered, and the Sabres must now turn their focus to the 2024-25 season, hoping that the struggles they faced were merely part of the growth process.
But could it be more than just growing pains? Consider the numerous setbacks that led to this disappointing season. If they can rebound come October 2024, this season might be quickly forgotten.
Until the new league year begins, blame will be cast widely, sparing no one from general manager Kevyn Adams to head coach Don Granato.
Undoubtedly, the Sabres’ downturn was one of the most disheartening narratives in the NHL. However, it’s possible that it will be viewed as a minor setback in the larger journey of rebuilding that began with Adams’ hiring in 2020.
Monumental setbacks crushed the Sabres season
Adversity seemed to shadow the Sabres from the outset, whether it was the summer of 2023, the midpoint of the season, or now, as they approach the conclusion of yet another (presumably) full 82-game schedule.
So, what factors contributed most to the Sabres’ struggles in the 2023-24 season, leading to a dramatic underperformance compared to expectations of ending the league’s longest playoff drought?
Several significant setbacks stand out. Firstly, there was the mishandling of young talent early in the season, which hindered their development. Additionally, the team faced challenges in goalkeeping, with seemingly every backup goaltender performing at an elite level against them. Moreover, the injury bug plagued the team persistently, even before the season commenced.
These obstacles compounded to create a season that fell far short of what was anticipated, leaving the Sabres grappling with disappointment and frustration as they struggled to meet their goals.
