BREAKING NEWS: New York Yankees’ next superstar has arrived, and his name is

Never mind Aaron Judge, Juan Soto, Gerrit Cole, and company. The New York Yankees have a new rising star in Anthony Volpe.

Volpe’s impressive performance continued on Friday with two more hits in the Yankees’ 3-0 loss to the Toronto Blue Jays, bringing his total to 11 hits in seven games. The 22-year-old shortstop is currently batting an impressive .423 with a 1.154 OPS.

Following a decent but somewhat underwhelming rookie season in 2023, Volpe is now showing signs of fulfilling the expectations placed upon him. As a former first-round draft pick, he faced the daunting challenge of being likened to Derek Jeter.

While Volpe showcased his talent with 21 home runs, 24 stolen bases, and a Gold Glove in his rookie year, there were still areas of his game that needed improvement, notably his high strikeout rate of 27.8% and his batting line of .209/.283/.383.

He wasn’t quite on par with Jeter.

However, Volpe seems to have made significant adjustments during the offseason, as noted by MLB analyst Harold Reynolds on Friday’s MLB Tonight program.

Reynolds highlighted a subtle yet significant adjustment in Volpe’s batting technique.

Previously, Volpe tended to stand too upright and dip down during the pitcher’s release in 2023. However, he has rectified this flaw by incorporating more of a loading action into his swing. This adjustment not only enhances his power but also stabilizes his head position, aiding in better ball tracking and more consistent contact.

As expected, Volpe’s performance has seen improvements across the board in 2024.

He’s displaying more patience at the plate, reducing his strikeouts, and hitting the ball with greater force. While it’s early in the season, his impressive start seems sustainable given the evident change in his mechanics.

With a refined swing, a more disciplined approach at bat, and a full season of MLB experience, Volpe is rapidly evolving into the MVP-caliber player the New York Yankees had envisioned.
