Assessments of talent are inherently subjective, and despite criticisms leveled at the Carolina Panthers in the past for their draft choices, it appears their fortunes are changing. In ESPN’s evaluation of the 2024 NFL Draft, four of the Panthers’ picks caught the eye of draft analyst Matt Miller.
Leading the Panthers’ selections on Miller’s list was the pick of Texas running back Jonathon Brooks at number 38. Despite concerns about his knee injury affecting his draft stock, Brooks is touted as the top running back in his class and is expected to enhance the team’s ground game, especially with his strong pass-blocking skills.
Another standout selection for Miller was the trade-up to secure South Carolina wide receiver Xavier Legette in the first round, ranked at number 44. The move not only secured Legette’s talent but also positioned the Panthers favorably with his fifth-year option, potentially crucial for future contract negotiations. Legette’s physical prowess, particularly in contested catches, is seen as a boon for quarterback Bryce Young.
Even a seventh-round pick, Michael Barrett, made Miller’s list at number 46, despite slipping in the draft. Barrett’s impressive tape as a linebacker at Michigan suggests he could contribute significantly, particularly on special teams, despite his shorter stature.
Finally, Ja’Tavion Sanders, drafted in the fourth round, stands out as a potential steal at number 52 on Miller’s list. Sanders’ versatility as a tight end offers immediate impact potential, with his agility and ability to create separation promising a dynamic threat on the field.
Overall, the Panthers’ draft strategy appears focused on bolstering talent around their young quarterback, with each pick contributing unique skills and potential to the team’s future success.
