Joe Willock is poised to make his long-awaited return to the Newcastle United squad after a five-month absence. The midfielder has been sidelined since sustaining a hamstring injury in May while playing against Brighton and Hove Albion. Tonight, he is expected to be included on the substitutes’ bench as Newcastle faces Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League at St James’ Park, with the match set to kick off at 8 pm.
In anticipation of the game, Willock expressed his joy at rejoining the team through a social media post, acknowledging the challenging journey he’s endured and thanking those who supported him during his recovery.
In the meantime, Sandro Tonali has also arrived at St James’ Park. The 23-year-old is currently under investigation by the Italian Prosecutor’s Office and the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) due to alleged involvement in illegal betting activities. According to the Daily Mail, Tonali’s legal team is reportedly in the process of reaching an agreement on a 10-month suspension, which would keep him out of action until August of the following year. However, he will still be allowed to participate in regular training sessions. Tonali had recently come on as a substitute in a 4-0 victory over Crystal Palace last Saturday, and he is currently eligible to play this evening, pending official confirmation.
