Here’s another classic move by Matt Rhule. He attends a camp and identifies a player who doesn’t have the readiness for Division 1 football; in fact, he hasn’t played organized football for over two years. However, he possesses the physique and athleticism that align with their standards. Moreover, he lacks any recruiting stars and has only begun receiving Division 1 offers.
This exemplifies the extreme version of what’s become known as the “Matt Rhule special.” David Hoffken joins the 2025 Nebraska recruiting class, committing on the spot when offered by the Huskers. The Nebraska coaching staff observed his performance at camps in Belton and Houston.

Hoffken stands tall at 6’7” with an impressive seven-foot wingspan, and his broad jump reaches 9’4”. He appears to be one of those players with immense potential but also uncertainty, possibly becoming a top draft pick in four years or a disappointment.
Undoubtedly, once recruiting services take notice, he’ll likely earn three stars, but for now, he remains unrated. This situation definitely piques my interest.
