Despite their impressive 43-22 start in 2024, the Baltimore Orioles are exploring the market for additional hitting and pitching support. Tommy Pham is the latest player to catch their interest.
According to Jim Bowden of The Athletic, the 36-year-old outfielder is a potential trade target for the team.
“The Orioles are also looking to add a right-handed-hitting fourth outfielder, with Tommy Pham of the White Sox being a possibility,” Bowden reported on June 11. The struggling Chicago White Sox, who currently hold the worst record in the league at 17-50, are gearing up for a major sell-off.
“The White Sox have no untouchables on their major-league roster,” Bowden noted. “They’re planning a fire sale, aiming to acquire as many good prospects as possible through numerous trades.”
Pham, an 11-year MLB veteran, is batting .280/.331/.402 with a .733 OPS in 2024, including 3 home runs and 12 RBIs. Although he’s currently on the Injured List, Pham will have the chance to showcase his skills to potential buyers once he returns. The MLB trade deadline is July 30.
Pham Would Replace Left-Handed Hitter
Given Bowden’s report, it appears that Pham would potentially replace a left-handed hitter on the roster, particularly in the outfield.
Cedric Mullins is a prime candidate for replacement, considering his significant struggles at the plate in 2024. The veteran centerfielder has been batting just .174/.222/.310 with a .532 OPS, hitting 6 home runs and 22 RBIs so far this year. Mullins recently ended an eight-game hitless streak on June 9 against the Tampa Bay Rays, but it remains uncertain whether this performance will be enough to secure his roster spot.
Another possibility is Kyle Stowers, who has primarily played with the Orioles’ Triple-A affiliate, the Norfolk Tides, this season. Stowers is a left-handed hitter and a prospect within the Orioles’ organization, but he has faced challenges in making significant progress.
