In a surprising move, Brentford has set a relatively low asking price for their star striker, Ivan Toney, who has garnered interest from Chelsea and Arsenal in the upcoming winter transfer window. Previously, it was expected that the Bees would demand no less than £80 million for Toney. However, transfer expert Fabrizio Romano confirmed on the Debrief Podcast that they are now willing to part with him for just £65 million. Even their manager, Thomas Frank, has indicated that a January sale might be necessary.
Toney, currently serving an eight-month ban related to betting, will be eligible to return to action in January. He has resumed training with the team but appears unlikely to continue playing for Brentford, given the interest from other clubs.
The former Newcastle United striker had an impressive season, finishing as the third-highest scorer in the Premier League, trailing only Harry Kane and Erling Haaland. If he joins a top-tier team, he could potentially contend for the Premier League Golden Boot.
Chelsea, particularly under Mauricio Pochettino, has been eager to acquire an experienced striker to address their goal-scoring issues. Players like Armando Broja and Nicolas Jackson have not displayed the same level of consistency as Toney. His addition would significantly bolster their No. 9 position and enhance their competitiveness against elite teams.
However, competition for Toney’s signature comes from London rivals Tottenham and Arsenal. Chelsea’s improved performance may persuade him that his arrival would substantially enhance their squad. Their main deficiency currently lies in the absence of a striker who can reliably deliver goals in every game. Once this issue is resolved, they aim to contend with the likes of Tottenham and Manchester City.
It’s worth noting that Toney has expressed a strong admiration for Arsenal, which adds a challenge to the signing. Arsenal may use their participation in the Champions League as a compelling factor to convince the striker to choose them. Despite having previously outbid Arsenal in the transfer market, the reasonable price being asked for Toney suggests that both clubs can afford the deal. The situation is still evolving, and it remains to be seen how it will develop.
