According to Sport Witness, Southampton are close to finalizing a deal to recruit free agent midfielder Saman Ghoddos from Brentford.
Many Southampton fans might be unfamiliar with Ghoddos, who is set to turn 31 in September. He joined Brentford initially on loan in August 2020 before the move was made permanent in January 2021. Ghoddos played a significant role in Brentford’s promotion to the Premier League during the 2020/21 season.
However, his playing time in the Premier League has been limited over the past three seasons, mainly featuring as a squad player for Brentford. In the most recent season, he was part of the matchday squad for 32 out of 34 Premier League games, starting 7, coming on as a substitute in 12, and remaining unused in 13.
Despite questions surrounding the move, Southampton’s interest appears driven by Ghoddos’s versatility and the fact that he is available on a free transfer, potentially making him a cost-effective option. Although primarily an attacking midfielder, he has also been deployed as a full back and winger.
Some Southampton supporters may be skeptical, particularly those hoping for bigger signings. However, manager Russell Martin seems focused on building a squad rather than just a starting eleven. Signing players like Ghoddos and Adam Lallana on one-year contracts is seen as a prudent move, providing additional experience without significant financial risk.
While significant business may not occur until July 1st, Southampton will likely need to make strategic signings to strengthen their squad ahead of what promises to be a challenging season.
