Atlanta United midfielder Bartosz Slisz made history as the first player from the club to compete in the UEFA European Championship. Slisz entered the match as a substitute for Poland in the 55th minute against the Netherlands, held at Hamburg’s Volksparkstadion. Despite his efforts to bolster Poland’s midfield, they succumbed to a 2-1 defeat, with Wout Weghorst scoring the winning goal for the Netherlands in the 83rd minute.
Poland initially took the lead through Adam Buksa in the 16th minute, only for Cody Gakpo to equalize for the Netherlands shortly after. Slisz, who joined Atlanta United in January 2024 from Legia Warsaw, has been a Polish international since 2021 and has accumulated 10 caps for his country. Poland, positioned in Group D, will face Austria on Friday, June 21, and France on Tuesday, June 25, in their upcoming matches.
Additionally, Atlanta United could see another player, Saba Lobjanidze, feature in UEFA EURO 2024, as he is included in Georgia’s national team roster. Georgia, with Lobjanidze, will debut in the tournament against Turkey on Tuesday, June 18.
