Auburn is set to bring on TJ Rushing, formerly Texas A&M’s defensive backs coach under Jimbo Fisher, in a new role as “special assistant,” as reported by Matt Zenitz of 247Sports.
Rushing, who joined Texas A&M in 2020 and worked closely with Auburn’s current defensive coordinator D.J. Durkin during his tenure there, was instrumental in Texas A&M achieving the best pass defense in the nation in 2022, allowing only 156.2 passing yards per game. However, the team saw a decline in this area in 2023, coinciding with Fisher’s departure and the hiring of a new coaching staff under Mike Elko.

Rushing’s precise responsibilities in his new role at Auburn remain unclear, but he is known for his strong recruiting prowess. He played a significant role in securing commitments from several top recruits at Texas A&M, including two five-star signees since 2022, highlighting his effectiveness in recruiting circles.
Auburn has also made other additions to its defensive coaching staff, including rehiring Wesley McGriff as cornerbacks coach and appointing Charles Kelly, formerly of Colorado, as co-defensive coordinator and safeties coach.
