Young Chelsea left-back Ian Maatsen has officially transferred to Aston Villa today, in a deal valued at around £37.5 million. He has signed a six-year contract with Villa, which extends through 2030. Maatsen departs after spending six years with Chelsea, joining from PSV at the age of 16.
During his time at Chelsea, Maatsen primarily gained experience through loan spells at Charlton Athletic, Coventry City, and Burnley in the lower leagues. Despite showing promise, he struggled to secure a regular role in Chelsea’s senior squad, making only 15 appearances and starting just 3 games last season amidst strong competition. In January, he embarked on another loan.
Maatsen’s impressive performances, including reaching the Champions League final with Dortmund, attracted significant interest this summer, with several clubs, reportedly including those willing to meet his £35 million release clause. Aston Villa, however, has reportedly exceeded that figure, paying £37.5 million to secure the services of the Dutch international.
Best wishes to Ian Maatsen as he moves on to Aston Villa!
