BREAKING: ALEX CORA PROVIDES UPDATES ON SERIOUS INJURY THAT LED RED SOX 24-YEARS OLD STAR OUT OF THE FIELD

BOSTON — Is Triston Casas any closer to returning than in recent weeks?

It’s complicated.

Before Saturday’s game against the San Diego Padres at Fenway Park, Red Sox manager Alex Cora updated on Casas’ progress, saying the 24-year-old is steadily moving toward a comeback.

“He has general soreness,” Cora mentioned, noting that Casas took dry swings on Saturday. “I think he’s going to do some work inside. I’m not sure if he’ll go on the field, but he felt okay with the swings. He did about 30, if I’m not mistaken. We’ll reassess tomorrow. He’ll swing again tomorrow.”

Casas has been out since April 20 due to fractured cartilage in his ribs. It’s unlikely he’ll return before the 2024 MLB All-Star break, but hopefully not much longer if all goes well.

Cora also updated on Vaughn Grissom, who has been sidelined since June 2 with a right hamstring strain — his second extended absence this season. Cora believes Grissom won’t be ready until he strengthens both legs and rehabs with Triple-A Worcester.

“It all depends,” Cora said. “He hasn’t played much. He missed spring training, had a rehab assignment, then got sick, and now he’s hurt again. We need to ensure he’s stronger, then plan his return.”

The Red Sox play at 4:10 p.m. ET on Saturday, facing the San Diego Padres in the middle game of their series. You can watch on NESN or NESN 360.
